Ecoffins

Our aim is to supply competitively priced, environmentally friendly products that meet high standards of both quality and ethical production.

We are a member of the World Fair Trade Organisations (WFTO) and we have also attained investors in People Bronze Standard in the UK.

Many of our products are made in the UK, but where ever we manufacture goods outside of the UK or EU, they are produced in carefully monitored WFTO workshops committed to improving the working conditions of local craftsmen and also sustaining the surrounding natural environment.

Ecoffins Shipping Footprint

All of our coffins are designed so that the different sizes fit inside one another “Russian Doll” style, so that a 20’ container holds 198 adult sizes. As a result, just one tenth of a gallon of fuel is used to ship one of our coffins from the Far East to the UK. An average 40 mpg car can travel just 4.8 miles with the same amount of fuel.

Fair Trade and sustainability

Principle Ten of the World Fair Trade Organisation is Respect for the Environment. This states: "Organisations which produce Fair Trade products maximise the use of raw materials from sustainably managed sources in their ranges, buying locally when possible. They use production technologies that seek to reduce energy consumption and where possible use renewable energy technologies that minimise greenhouse gas emissions. They seek to minimise the impact of their waste stream on the environment." "Buyers and importers of Fair Trade products give priority to buying products made from raw materials that originate from sustainably managed sources, and have the least overall impact on the environment." As a fully accredited member of the WFTO, Ecoffins is a leader in its region of China on all the above points. For example, our workshop in China cuts down its energy consumption and makes use of 100% of the bamboo brought into the factory by burning all the leaves and off cuts to run its kiln drying room. It also buys all its raw materials from Government Licensed Plantations.

Materials

The materials we use are all carefully chosen for their sustainability as well as low impact during harvesting.

Bamboo
Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth, growing up to a metre a day. Our species of bamboo Phyllostachys Pubescens does not form any part of the Chinese panda’s diet and pandas do not live in Hunan Province where our company is located.

Banana
Banana cord is made using the dried woven leaves after the tree has produced its fruit and died back each year. Banana plants are often mistaken for trees as their main stem grows up to 8 metres; but they are in fact the world’s largest known herb.

Pandanus
Pandanus or wild pineapple is the environmentally friendly alternative to seagrass, a plant which grows in warm coastal waters. Seagrass soaks up carbon dioxide from the seafloor, locking it away indefinitely, unless it is disturbed. It is also home to many nursery fish. Seagrass is therefore an incredibly important plant which needs to be conserved. Pandanus, on the other hand, is a prolific and fast growing plant which is easy to sustain.

Pine
Pine is native to most of the Northern Hemisphere and the pine we use is a rapidly growing FSC certified variety from Poland. Pine grows up to 25 metres in height and our species can be harvested at less than 7 years.

Willow
Willow is a deciduous tree found primarily in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Almost all willows take root very readily from cuttings taken from the original crown, or even where broken branches are left lying on the ground.

Cardboard
Cardboard is made from cartonboard materials produced from unbleached pulp containing a minimum 80% recycled paper, plus wood pulp sourced from sustainable forests. Only natural starch based glues are used – no bolts, screws, tape or other fixings. The handles are made from natural woven cotton.
